Newsletter: August 2001
* Welcome Welcome Welcome to the August edition of our newsletter! With the move of all our staff and services to our new premises finally complete, we are enjoying the benefits of having everyone under one roof. This move will help keep our costs down and allow us to provide an even better service to you, our clients. QV1 reception is now officially closed, and all payments, deliveries and onsites are now accepted at our new address - Level 6, 263 Adelaide Terrace (the Durack Centre). Good News for Rockingham Clients
Recent Telstra announcements have confirmed that some of Telstra's Rockingham customers are now able to make untimed calls to Perth for a flat fee of 25 cents. This is great news for iiNet's Rockingham members who use Telstra, as it means you may be able to connect to our Perth servers at local call rates and experience a direct connection to our servers - gamers should be pleased with this! It will also mean that traffic from our Perth servers will now be counted as local for those customers able to take advantage of the new call rates, which is beneficial to those with volume-charged or capped accounts. To check if you are eligible, or to have this service activated on your Telstra account, you will need to call Telstra on 132200 - and make sure you don't let their marketing machine talk you into changing to a BigPond account More information on the Telstra announcement can be found at the following URL: http://www.telstra.com.au/newsroom/release.cfm?ReleaseID=14281
Network Upgrades For those customers who do dial Rockingham, you'll be pleased to know that iiNet will shortly be introducing a new dialup number for the Rockingham POP. This new rotary will incorporate a faster link to Perth, and will increase the total number of lines available to 480 - with the result of giving you both faster and longer connections. Rockingham clients will be kept advised as these developments take place. In addition, the bandwidth and number of lines connected to all our remote POPs is currently being re-evaluated, with the Perth-Bunbury link the next to be scheduled for an upgrade. Keep an eye out for updates on this topic in the near future.
New Feature for Explorer Accounts! Now your Explorer account is even more flexible. With this new tool available from the Explorer toolbox on our webpage, you have more control than ever over your account. Going on holidays? Not using your account for a while? Network News It has been a busy month for our Network Operations team. The move of our server machines out of the QV1 Level 9 Machine Room is now complete, with all machines having been relocated to either our state-of-the-art server room in the QV1 Basement, or to the new machine room at the Durack Centre. The new network infrastructure design incorporates full redundancy across the network, which should see a significant increase in the reliability of services provided to you! There were a number of scheduled outages during the course of the network relocation. When an outage is planned, this information is released on our network status mailing list, which all iiNet customers are welcome to subscribe to. If you would like to know in advance when our Network team has scheduled any downtime or maintenance that may directly affect our users, simply subscribe to our "netstatus" list at the following URL: http://listmaster.iinet.net.au/cgi-bin/list-about?statusAnd don't forget you can also see any current faults that have been reported on our network at the following URL: http://www.iinet.net.au/fault/Some of our clients may have experienced problems with iiNet's email service towards the end of last month. These problems occurred when critical services, including the Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS), were moved from QV1 to the Durack Centre. When the move was complete and power was restored, our mail system machine failed to resume normal service. This was rectified, but there was a resultant issue with the system's load-balancing mechanism. Thanks to the excellent feedback received from our customers regarding the ongoing mail issues, the Network team was able to identify the problem, which could then be addressed. Thank you for your persistence and patience during this outage! Call Centre News iiNet's Call Centre successfully moved from QV1 to the Durack Centre in the wee hours of Sunday July 22nd, thanks to a marathon effort by a large team of iiNet staff. The PABX system at QV1 was shut down at 1:10am and successfully relocated to the new offices, and we took our first support call at #263 at 3:00am. The iiNet iiVan wore a groove along the Terrace bringing across all the PCs, phones and chairs. Those of you who called our support desk immediately after the relocation may have noticed a couple of faults with our phone system. The move across town meant that Telstra could not continue to provide our standard support number to our new premises, so our brilliant Network Operations team, in collaboration with Nortel, have routed all support calls down our fibre link from QV1 to the new offices. While this setup was extensively tested on our dialup rotaries prior to implementation, it turned out there were a few bugs to be eradicated once the new phone system was up and running. The first of these was a periodic dropping of calls caused when the PABX at 263 reacted to a phenomenon known as "jitter" on the fibre link, and the second was excessive echo on the phone lines. Both issues were addressed by a reconfiguration of the hardware at both ends of the fibre links, and no further incidences of either problem have occurred.
Karrinyup Shop Now that we are all under one roof, our Karrinyup staff will soon be joining us here in Perth. From Monday 30th July, the Karrinyup shop will turn into an Internet Paradise, with many of our iiNet Web Terms available for everyone to use at a very special rate! As the Karrinyup shop will no longer accept account payments we are fortunate to have an Australia Post right next door which will, as usual, accept iiNet payments if you have a paper invoice. You can also make credit card payments online at billpay.iinet.net.au - why not try this out on one of our Web Terms at the shop? We would like to thank you for taking the time to read this letter. We hope it has been informative. Leesa Vanderwall created this newsletter with input from Glen Lewis, Jody Morris, Russell Stokes and Rolf Goff.
