iiNet Reaches Three Milestones For 2002

At the end of 2001 iiNet's Managing Director Michael Malone, announced three corporate goals for the year 2002.

1. To Become Quality Assured - IS09001
2. To Have 100,000 Clients Australia Wide
3. To Attain 10,000 ADSL Accounts

iiNet is very proud to announce we have achieved ALL three goals!

1. iiNet Achieves IS09001

iiNet is pleased to announce that on the 19th December 2002 we became a fully accredited, quality endorsed company, allowing us to proudly display the five ticks quality system logo.

What does this mean for iiNet?

It ensures iiNet's quality management systems are sound in theory and in practice.

In order for iiNet to maintain its position as a premier Internet Service Provider (ISP), it is essential that we constantly meet or exceed our customers' requirements and expectations for the quality, performance, timeliness, and cost of the products and services we provide.

What does this mean to you?

iiNet is committed to providing excellence in Internet service provision in Australia. We will continually strive to exceed our customer's expectations by:

* Delivering quality products, excellent service and value for money
* Remaining at the forefront of international standards of best practice
* Listening to our customers
* Providing our staff with the resources they need to continually improve
the level of service they provide
* Conducting our business in a responsible and ethical manner,
and complying with regulatory requirements

2. ADSL Goals Achieved

Broadband (ADSL) was one of the major focus points for iiNet staff in 2002, with a goal set at the end of last year to reach the magic number of 10,000 ADSL customers by 31 December 2002. We're proud to announce that on December 17, with two weeks to spare, the 10,000th account was activated! A second iiNet goal for 2002 was achieved!

iiNet is very pleased about the overwhelming uptake and interest in its bliink range. Many iiNet customers upgraded their dial-up account to experience faster Internet without billing surprises at the end of the months or long-term contracts.

Additionally, the word of flat rate broadband spread around Australia resulting in many customers leaving their ISP to get the ‘bliink benefits’.

3. iiNet now has over 100,000 Clients

To make a good year even better, our third corporate goal was reached two weeks later, with only hours to spare before the deadline, when we announced the acquisition of Local Telecom's 15,000-strong client base. This means iiNet now has an outstanding 100,000 clients Australia wide.

Origin Internet

iiNet is pleased to announce the acquisition of Origin Internet (www.origin.net.au). Origin Internet is based in country Victoria and has 6,500 customers in regional Victoria and NSW.

The migration of Origin Internet customers will commence in early March and will be finalised in the beginning of April.

We will be in contact with our new customers on an ongoing basis to answer any questions and concerns to make certain that the migration will be unproblematic!

Local Telecom and Internet Limited

iiNet is pleased to announce we have entered into an agreement with Local Telecom and Internet Ltd to acquire Tas Access (www.tassie.net.au) and Ruralnet (www.ruralnet.net.au).

These acquisitions are subject to due diligence and local shareholder approval. We expect final confirmation of the deal by the end of February.

Combined, the two ISPs have 15,000 customers, with the majority based in Tasmania and rural Victoria.

Integration of our new customers from Tasmania and Victoria will begin over the next few months. Full integration is expected by the end of June 2003. iiNet will be in contact with all new customers in the next few months to ensure a warm welcome and hassle-free integration!

Alternative Shell Access

As per our November newsletter, iiNet regretfully announced the retirement of our online shell server opera.iinet.net.au, which will be taken offline on the 1st of July 2003.

Opera has been a part of the iiNet network for many years and it is sad that the minority of users abusing the server have resulted in the need to shut down a valued service. On a more positive note, there are a number of companies offering a free or inexpensive shell service with most of the functionality currently available on opera.

Check out the URL below for a comprehensive list of free shell providers:

http://www.leftfoot.com/freeshells.html

A quick summary of the shell providers we have investigated is listed:

http://www.cyberspace.org/shell.html

Cyberspace is a non-profit company who offer shell service for free to enrich the Internet experience for all. Signup is done via a link off their web page. They provide 1MB of disk space and block access to telnet, ftp and IRC

http://sdf.lonestar.org/

Lonestar is also non-profit company which is made up of software authors, teachers, students, researchers, hobbyists and enthusiasts. Server runs on NetBSD and provides 15MB of space with support for pop3, elm, pine, lynx, cgi/php, bash, tclsh, tcsh etc. Application is done online with a snail mail validation process.

http://www.rootshell.be/

Rootshell, another non-profit company provides 2Mb of space with support for pop3.

For those of you not interested in signing up with a free shell provider iiNet will be implementing a number of web-based interfaces to take over most of the functions of opera in the near future.

bliink Broadband Home Payment Methods

As a friendly reminder to all bliink Home Account holders, these accounts are payable by automatic credit card debit only.

Lately, some customers have been using other methods to pay, and with the delay of those payments getting to us, this has resulted in doubling up of payments.

In order to avoid this in future, all cheque payments are now being returned unprocessed.

Over the next few months we will be phasing out the ability to pay these bliink Home Accounts by other methods including BPAY and Australia Post Payments.

More information will be supplied to bliink Home Account holders in the coming months as it becomes available.

Changes to Webmail

Taking on board all the suggested improvements by iiNet clients and staff our technicians have liaised with external developers to produce a new and improved Webmail service. iiNet is proud to support the GPL community and would like to thank them for their efforts. The new version will appear simpler, but contain greater functionality than the current service.

This new version was made active on Monday 13th January, and will run in parallel with the current Webmail 2. Please feel free to check it out at:

http://webmail.iinet.net.au/

As a result of this upgrade webmail.iinet.net.au (the really old version) has been decommissioned. Webmail 2 - the version that is currently linked to our webpage will run for two weeks, so that we have time to test the new system. On the 27th of January (assuming all goes well) Webmail 2 will be decommissioned and Webmail 3 will take over entirely.

Please note:
Webmail 2 and Webmail 3 will not be linked in any way. Any updates made to Webmail 2 after 9am Monday the 13th (including adding addresses to the address book) will not be carried across to Webmail 3 and will be lost when Webmail 2 is decommissioned on Monday 27th January.

Upgrades to Bandwidth Servicing in Melbourne, Sydney & Brisbane

iiNet has experienced rapid growth in our East Coast Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne Points of Presence (POPs). To accommodate this growth, during January iiNet will be almost doubling the amount of bandwidth servicing those POPs.

This will mean increased speeds for broadband and dialup customers in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria.

During February iiNet will be activating additional infrastructure on the East Coast, to bring those networks in line with the Perth network. This infrastructure will build redundancy (resilience to failure) into the network and allow iiNet to enhance its network management nationally.

Notification of a Network Change

Most web-browsers have the facility to specify a proxy server, effectively telling your computer to check if the webpage is available on that machine (cache engine) before accessing the rest of the internet. This can allow you to access a webpage quicker and assists us by decreasing the amount of data we need to access from the internet.

Even though we perform this function for you automatically, we have always allowed you to have a proxy setting specified. This is the official notice that this funtion will stop working. If you have proxy.m.iinet.net.au, proxy.iinet.net.au or any manual entry for an iiNet proxy in your web-browser you will be unable to access web-pages, as the Cache Engines will not honour the request.

If this is the case we ask that you remove these manual proxy configuration settings from your web-browser.

For those of you who do not know what a proxy server is please visit our support page for further information:

http://www.iinet.net.au/support/index.html

or if you are still unsure please contact our Customer Service Centre on 13 22 58.

New Dialup Numbers for Gingin & Toodyay

As mentioned in previous newsletters, iiNet is in the process of migrating their current dailup numbers to allocated 01983 XXXXX numbers.

So what are 01983X numbers?

These are numbers allocated to carriers by the Australian Communications Authority and used for local call collection in designated call Collection Areas (CCA's). CCA's are different to the Geographic numbers that we are all used to, as they work in a different and more efficient way.

So how do these new numbers work?

Instead of different charging zones (i.e. local call, community call, STD1, STD2, etc ) that we are all used to, all 01983x numbers are charged to clients for the cost of a local call.

The first to benefit from this migration are clients who currently dial into our Gingin or Toodyay POPs.

Using new numbers with larger call collection areas iiNet has increased its regional coverage and now provides a direct service to Perth for its Gingin and Toodyay clients, at the cost of a local or community call.

If you're in Gingin or Toodyay the new number is : 019 837 0000

We will continue to keep you updated as the migration makes its way across Australia and we add new areas to this fantastic iiNet service.

For a more comprehensive list of iiNet's dialup numbers please see:
