Message from
the Managing Director

Welcome to the first issue of iiNews for 2004. I hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable New Year.

December was another busy month at iiNet, with preparations for the launch of our new iiPhone product, which you can read about in the article below. I would like to thank all staff involved in the iiPhone launch for your hard work, which ensured it was released on schedule.

I would also like to thank our customers who helped us to win four awards in Money magazines ‘Best of the Best’ edition. iiNet won Best Dialup ISP for Service, Speed and Reliability, and our bliink 512 plan won Best Broadband Plan. iiNet wouldn’t be such a successful company if it weren’t for our customers support.

We are now looking forward to the opportunities that 2004 will bring us, with many exciting new products and offers planned. With our focus still on providing the best customer service and product range possible we hope you will help us to win a few more awards!

iiNet wins ‘Best of the Best’ Awards

In December iiNet won four awards in the Best of the Best Annual 2004 edition of Money Magazine. These awards included:

Best Dialup ISP in Service
Best Dialup ISP in Speed
Best Dialup ISP in Reliability
Best Broadband Plan

The article which discusses these awards can be found on pages 38 and 39 of the December/ January 2004 issue of Money. When discussing iiNet’s dialup Explorer account the magazine states, “Realistically you should never need to pay more than $40 a month for a flexible, reliable dialup internet account. Our winning ISP, iiNet, offers its Explorer account at that price (with an additional set-up fee). Included is unlimited connection hours, ten email boxes and 30 megabytes of server space for a personal website.” On page 40 of the same issue of Money, iiNet’s bliink 512 plan was voted Best Broadband Plan.

The Money awards were a great end to what has been a successful year for iiNet. In June 2003 iiNet won the APC magazine ‘Editor’s Choice Award,’ and we also took out two awards in the AC Nielsen Poll in October. The AC Nielsen Poll awards were Top ISP in overall Customer Service and Top ISP in Customer Satisfaction, with a massive 93 percent of customers expressing satisfaction with the level of service provided by iiNet.

Again we would like to thank all of our customers for enabling us to win these awards. We hope you will continue to support us throughout 2004 to make this year as successful as the last!

iiPhone Launch!

On December 15 iiNet launched its new phone product to existing bliink broadband clients, with rates that are even cheaper than the multinational Telcos. Customers who join iiPhone will get iiNet’s competitive rates on all their international calls, national calls and calls to mobiles. These customers can also get bliink broadband from as low as $39.95 every month if they spend over $20 on their iiNet phone calls.

iiNet MD Michael Malone said the phone service was another way for iiNet to provide an alternative to the large multinational Telcos. “Being the number two ADSL provider in Australia we are really excited about branching into the phone market, as we will be able to add value by offering our customers an additional service,” he said.

The service is very easy to adopt, as your iiPhone calls and your broadband Internet access are billed by iiNet on one convenient statement. Your local calls and line rental continue to be billed by your current provider. But even this could change, with Mr Malone hinting at iiNet’s plans to introduce a local call service in the next quarter, which would mean customers could soon have all their home phone calls and Internet billed by iiNet.

As an added bonus our iiPhone customers can also switch to monthly billing instead of quarterly billing if they pay by credit card. For more information on the iiPhone service please visit http://phone.iinet.net.au/ or call the iiNet Sales Team on 131917.

New Bandwidth Deal

Last month iiNet selected Telstra Wholesale and Asia Netcom as its new vendors for National Transmission and International IP requirements.
This new bandwidth deal allows for improved network stability and stronger peering points across Australia for iiNet and its acquired ISPs.
iiNet Chief Technology Officer Greg Bader said that in the latest round of tenders iiNet was looking for partners that could deliver the quality and reliability that iiNet customers demand.
“ANC are our incumbent supplier, we know how they operate and we have been impressed with their dedication to us as a customer,” he said.
“The biggest surprise for us however was Telstra’s competitiveness. In this industry, ISP’s generally view Telstra as the main competition. So I see the irony of their largest ADSL wholesale customer selecting them as a partner – but they are offering the level of service that we require,” Bader added.
At iiNet’s AGM in November, board members alluded to plans to commence a national rollout of their own ADSL infrastructure.
When asked to expand further on this point, Bader added, “We are completing due diligence on our plans for deploying DSLAM’s, we operate on a simple business model – if it makes sense financially and delivers benefits to our customers, then it will happen.”
After the recent merger with ihug, iiNet is now considered the number 2 provider of ADSL throughout Australia.

GAMING TIPS

This month’s tips go to fans of Lara Croft Tomb Raider- Angel of Darkness on PS2.

Choose your weapons carefully- Default weapons like pistols are light and accurate, but are single shot, non-automatics. They look good, but aren’t ideal for a shoot out.

Save, save, save- Always save your game before a complicated or dangerous move - if you don't, you risk getting killed or injured and may have to redo loads of moves to get back to where you were.

Walk along- Just tap the L1 button, rather than holding it, and Lara will keep walking. Tap the button again to stop.

Ledge Handstand- Get Lara to hang from a ledge, then press the up key to get her to do a handstand on the edge.

Tip of the Month

If your ADSL disconnects, in most cases try to reboot your modem yourself, and see if this works before calling support.

Angela Ballerini

Name: Angela Ballerini
Account Type: Explorer Dialup
Customer Since: 2 ½ years

Why did you join iiNet?
My boyfriend and I were looking to change ISP's, as our previous provider
wasn't too reliable and kept dropping out, so we wanted an ISP that didn't
have these problems. We asked around and some friends of ours were
already with iiNet and they suggested we check them out, so we did. That was
nearly three years ago now!

What do you mainly use the Internet for?
The majority of my use stems from emails - It's so much easier to keep
in touch with overseas friends and it's definitely a lot quicker than “snail mail”!
My other main use is in Internet banking, working 9am-5pm makes it hard
to get to the bank sometimes, the Internet alleviates these problems by
being available 24/7 for transfers and payments.
Other than that it's just general surfing and checking out sites that
are of interest to me and my family.

What is the focus of your life at the moment?
The biggest focus of my life at the moment is my house. My boyfriend and
I recently bought a block and we've just started construction so we're
keeping busy by selecting the internal furnishings. I also really enjoy
catching up with my friends for a quiet drink on the weekend and I am
extremely dedicated to my job as a legal secretary.

Duration at iiNet? All up? About 4.5 years... I took a brief hiatus...

What do you enjoy most about your job?
Problem solving. We are a big ISP and some of the pitfalls of trying to do things faster and better with a growing customer base means we are playing with leading edge technology. We sit alongside the vendor of some new equipment debugging their systems for them while their own engineer scratches his head. Its great knowing that our team can rise to that kind of level. This indepth knowledge of our systems means we can upgrade them and spot flaws and bottlenecks with much more efficiency.

Where do you think iiNet will be in five years time?
Growing... always growing. I keep waiting for a quiet period where we can all rest on our laurels for a month or so. I've been waiting for 4 years...

To enter either of the movie competitions for January simply email: competitions@iinet.net.au and write the name of the cinema you'd like tickets for in the subject line, and answer this question: What date is iiNet's private screening of Pirates of the Carribean being held?
