Newsletter: July 2001
* Welcome Welcome Welcome to the July edition of our newsletter. The big news of this month is of course our move to new premises. This move, along with internal leadership and management courses we are running, have lead to an increase in morale company wide. It is an exciting time to be a part of the iiNet team! iiNet's New Premises At the end of this month we leave the QV1 building. We moved into QV1 from 105 St Georges Terrace in December of 1996 and it is with some sadness that we leave. As of the 23rd of July both our reception area at QV1 and our help desk will be located at Durack House, Level 6, 263 Adelaide Terrace. As mentioned last month, we are continuing with business as usual over the move and clients should notice little disruption to the support services we provide. What does this this mean for you? If you would normally make a trip to the QV1 building to pay your account, as of the above date you will have to come to 263 Adelaide Terrace. We have been accepting client's machines for in-house problem fixes for several weeks now at our new premises and will continue to do so. iiNet staff have been eagerly looking forward to being under one roof, in the belief that streamlined processes and a more cohesive company unit will result in improved efficiency and morale. This in turn will benefit all our clients.
Network News Network Operations would like to address the outage that occurred late last month. The outage occurred when 30% of our old network was moved to our new premises. While the move was completed by 6am, problems with local routing resulted in several services including SMS, Newsgroups and parts of CitySpan being down from 10am until approximately 2pm. Connections to our Gingin Point of Presence (POP) were also affected during this time. iiNet and Network Operations would like to apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused. We have been trialling frontpage extensions for our clients with full and sub domains recently. These trials are continuing and we hope to be able to announce their release in the next week. Clients wishing to register their interest should visit this page: https://toolbox.iinet.net.au/In response to client requests, iiNet has prepared a web interface where current faults affecting our network are lodged. These faults will vary in severity and range of effect. For example one may list a scheduled outage by Western Power to one of our remote POP's, while the next may be an aberration reported to our support staff by our clients with respect to our dial up access. If you suspect that something isn't quite right, it may be worthwhile checking this webpage first: http://www.iinet.net.au/fault/
Network Upgrades The speed of the link to our Gingin POP has recently been upgraded from 256K up to 384k. Our connection to the Ellenbrook Community has also been increased by 50% in the last fortnight.
Games News Good news for Quake 3 players, a new point release and OSP version have just come out and iiNet has upgraded its servers. The client downloads are available as usual on the iiNet ftp server: Point Release:ftp://ftp.iinet.net.au/pub/games/idstuff/quake3/win32/q3pointrelease_129f_beta.exe New OSP: ftp://ftp.iinet.net.au/pub/games/quake/quake3/osp-quake3-0.99v.zip iiNet games headed out to UWALAN again on the weekend and this time the event made the news on TV! It was sold out again as 350 people brought their computers together for this great social gathering. Each successive LAN is getting bigger. This was the first LAN held in the main arena at Challenge stadium. Domain Name Licence Renewals Warning A number of our customers are still receiving letters about their domain name from companies other than iiNet. This letter is usually phrased as a warning that their domain name is about to expire, but if they send money, they'll be saved. In some cases, an actual invoice has been sent requesting payment be sent immediately or the domain name will be deregistered. Please do not pay these companies. The ACCC and the Australian Domain Authority have released a consumer warning about this practice, which you can read at: http://www.auda.org.au/alert_renewal.htmlIf you are paying iiNet for your domain, then you will only ever receive an Invoice from us. If you get a letter like this, please just forward it (unpaid!) to us and we'll deal with it.
Wantree Support Number Decommissioned On the 14th of June iiNet handed back the premises formerly occupied by Wantree Internet. As such, the old support phone number, 9221 8899, has been discontinued. All clients in the Perth metropolitan area should now be dialing 9214 2222 for Internet or accounts help. Our country number is 13 22 58 and is charged at the cost of a local call, higher of course from mobile phones. We would like to thank you for taking the time to read this letter. We hope it has been informative. Jody Morris created this newsletter with input from Glen Lewis, Rolf Goff, Nathan Thomas, Debbie Wilson and Michael Malone.
