Welcome

Welcome to the June edition of our newsletter. Winter is traditionally a quiet season for us but not this year! We are happy to be launching a couple of new client tools and will be running some training seminars in Geralton.

Don't forget our customer support team is available 24 hours a day by calling 9214 2222 or emailing support@iinet.net.au

New Lines

iiNet are continually adding more lines to our main dial in numbers. This month we added a further 240 lines to our primary dial in number, 9213 1000. This takes the number of lines on this number to 4560 and the total number of iiNet dial in lines in WA to over 8000.

New Tools

Our very popular Webmail feature is getting a revamp. It will have the much longed for address book feature, folders for sorting your e-mail, logout facility and an optional secure server login for those who want more security. This new and improved service will be available very soon. Keep your eye on http://webmail.iinet.net.au/ for Webmail V2.0.

iiNet SMS is another additional service that will be coming online in the next month. Offered as a separate product to our Explorer, Voyager and Web Affiliate accounts, this service will allow you to send text messages to a mobile phone connected to Optus, Telstra or Vodaphone via our web page.

Power Outage

The power capacity to our floor will be undergoing a major upgrade on Wednesday the 7th of June. Because of this power outage, we will be unable to maintain the network for a period that morning. There will be a complete outage from 2am until 6am on this day. We apologise for this inconvenience but assure you all that this will improve our quality of service.

Usenet News Service

Our Usenet news service has been upgraded and now receives an additional 10 gigabytes of news every day. That is three times more than last month. If you use Usenet, you should notice a more consistent feed of binary articles, as well as faster propogation in the other hierarchies.

If you do not know how to use news you might like to look at our news support pages so you too can enjoy the high speed download world of usenet. Please be aware that, like the web, usenet contains some content that may not be suitable for children.

Geraldton Seminars

On the 13th, 14th and 15th of June iiNet will be running free training seminars in Geraldton, one of our newest points of presence. The topic of the seminars is "An introduction to the Internet". You may register your interest by calling our support staff on 9214 2222. The seminars will be advertised in the Geraldton Guardian.

Games News

It has been another busy month at iiNet games. Last week, due to popular demand, iiNet released a Kingpin server. The address of the kingpin server is kingpin.iinet.net.au.

Due to the consistent popularity of the Halflife server, A second Halflife server has been released. It is currently running the Firearms mod, but can be changed to any of a number of mods. Keep an eye out for the Matrix and TFC2 mods coming soon. The address of this server is hlmod.iinet.net.au

The Action server has long been one of iiNet's most popular games. This has prompted work to begin on a second Action server. When finalised, it will run Capture the Briefcase. The address of this server is q2mod.iinet.net.au:28001. It will be given a nicer name when finished, but feel free to join in the testing in the meantime.

Accounts issues

If you need to send mail with attached documents but find that sometimes you have difficulties it could be the size of the file that you are trying to send that is causing the problem.

You must make sure that the email you are sending is not larger than 5MB. When you are sending a binary file like a picture or a document, those files when transferred through the mail server will grow in size. If you are sending a file, which is around 3.5MB, it may reach close to 5MB, depending on that file type. Mail servers talk to each other in text, so the files you are sending are turned into ASCII before being transferred across from one server to another. That makes them grow in size. If the file that you are sending is too big, try compressing it. Good software to compress files is WinZip. You can click to check out our tutorial on WinZip here:

Thank you for taking the time to read this Newsletter, we hope it has been of value.
