Newsletter: April 2000
* Welcome * New Lines * ADSL Trial * Virus Help * Scoop/iiNet Privilege club * Account Issues * Games News * Network Status Mailing list Welcome Hi there and welcome to the May issue of iiNet's newsletter. We are all quite busy gearing up to the new financial year and the introduction of the GST as we are sure all of you are too. We would like to wish a happy belated Mothers Day to all of the Mums out there. We hope you all had a great day last Sunday! New Lines Our newest point of presence has just come online. Geraldton is up and running and currently has 60 lines with a 256Kbit ISDN link to Perth. The dial in number there is 9956 0300. The scheduled upgrades to Gingin and Rockingham went ahead as promised. All our current and pending upgrades can now be seen on our homepage by visiting this site. http://www.iinet.net.au/help/numbers.html ADSL Trial As some of you may already be aware iiNet has been invited by Telstra to participate in an Unbundled Local Loop (ULL) trial. The trial will involve us building our own DSL test network to trial ADSL broadband services with a small group of already nominated participants. ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) is a technology which increases the bandwidth capacity of existing copper telephone lines. More information about our DSL trial is available from: http://www.iinet.net.au/about/investor/mr00-6.html Virus Help Programs have been written that can prevent PC users from being infected by the "I Love You" virus and its many variants. One such tool that we have heard of was created by The Cerberus Security Team. You can read more about the "I Love You" virus and download the program by visiting this site. http://www.iinet.net.au/help/iloveyou.html Scoop/iiNet Privilege club The iiNet/Scoop Privilege Club offers you reserve seating to a selection of Perth's best events with online ticketing, discount packages and exclusive offers not available to the general public, and an email members-only mailing list with updates on events and more. The Scoop Privilege Club are now able to offer iiNet users $50 off the standard membership fee of $149. This $99 annual membership includes; subscription to Scoop Magazine, information updates, booking and reservation privileges, and shopping privileges. Visit http://www.scoop.com.au/club/ to find out more information, and remember to visit http://www.scoop.com.au/iinet/ to take advantage of the $50 off the full membership price! Account Issues The majority of our account holders are owners of an "Explorer" account. This account offers flat rate Internet access, an email address and 20 megabytes of disk space which allows you to publish your own website. Although there are no daily time limits or time charges for the Explorer Account, it is subject to a "fair-use" provision, which means a watch program monitors congestion on the line and disconnects people during busy times. You may be disconnected if you have been connected for over two hours. If you are disconnected, there is a short wait of 5 minutes before you may login again. If you do not wait for a full five minutes the watch program will disconnect you again. If you are not sure which sort of account you have you can check this and all of your contact details by visiting this site. http://ragtime.iinet.net.au/bin/overview Games News iiNet Games has been busy this month giving Rockingham it's own dedicated games server. The popular Bluegrass server from Perth has been replaced by a newer, faster machine. Bluegrass has been moved to Rockingham. If you dial our Rockingham rotary, you will find excellent responses from our local server there. The server runs:
The Ellenbrook game server has also been upgraded this month and now runs:
See the iiNet games site http://www.iinet.net.au/games/ for instructions on how to connect to these servers. We are always looking for new games to host for our clients, and we currently have the space for new games. Kingpin is one suggestion we are looking at, but we would like more feedback. Please send any suggestions for games servers (They must run on Linux) to (games@iinet.net.au). Network Status Mailing list When a fault is discovered, or system maintenance is occurring, iiNet's support team lodge reports which are sent to a mailing list. You can subscribe or unsubscribe to this mailing list by visiting http://listmaster.iinet.net.au/list/status A confirmation e-mail will be sent to the e-mail address you specify. Thank you for taking the time to read this Newsletter, we hope it has been of value. This newsletter was put together by Jody Morris, Chris Brown, Neshka Erbel, John Lindsay, Nathan Thomas and Kim Davies.
