Broadband News - New Term-Free Option!

Until now, iiNet's Broadband ADSL Home accounts (ADSL Freedom & ADSL Explorer) have only been available on 12 or 18 month fixed periods. Thanks to feedback from clients in rental accommodation or unable to commit to a long term agreement, iiNet is delighted to announce our new "Term Free" option. This option allows you to enjoy all the benefits iiNet Broadband has to offer, without being committed to a fixed agreement period.

How does it work? The "Term Free" option for both ADSL Freedom and ADSL Explorer accounts has an initial setup fee of $149.00, however does NOT include an ADSL modem. When you choose this option, you are able to purchase a quality D-Link DSL300 Ethernet ADSL modem from us at an additional cost of $330, or you may choose to supply your own DSL modem. This "Term Free" alternative makes it easier for clients wanting to move from an alternative ISP to iiNet DSL, without having to pay the additional fee for an unwanted modem.

So now's your chance to become part of the Broadband revolution without having to commit to a long term agreement!

ADSL Modems

iiNet is pleased to announce that all new iiNet Broadband ADSL accounts (with the exception of the "Term Free" option) will come standard with the D-Link DSL300 Ethernet ADSL modem. In an effort to provide a more stable level of service to ADSL clients, iiNet now provides the D-Link DSL300 Ethernet modem as the entry level model. This also means no additional costs for clients with operating systems that do not support USB modems.

If you want to know more about the D-Link DSL300 Ethernet ADSL modem, you can check out the D-Link website, at:

New Spam Filters

iiNet has recently replaced the spam filtering system on our email servers. The new system utilises a global database of mail servers that have been listed as originating spam, and refuses any mail that has been touched by any mail server in the database. The database is updated daily. One of the most effective methods of preventing spam email from being relayed, this system produces a significant reduction in the volume of spam delivered to iiNet customers while being much less likely to reject legitimate mail than other methods.

Since the deployment of this new system (Thursday 9/5/2002), we have rejected over 1 million spam emails destined for iiNet customers . so hopefully everyone has noticed the reduction in spam!

Virus Update: W32/Klez.h@MM

There is a new virus - Klez - doing the rounds at the moment. W32.Klez.gen@mm is a mass-mailing worm that searches the Windows address book for email addresses and sends messages to all recipients that it finds. The subject and attachment name of incoming emails is randomly chosen. The attachment will have one of the following extensions: .bat, .exe, .pif or .scr.

The worm exploits a vulnerability in Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express in an attempt to execute itself when you open or even preview the message. Information and a patch for the vulnerability can be found at

Network News

iiNet's Margaret River POP has recently been upgraded with a new router and a higher speed link (1.5Mb/s) back to Perth. This is the same type of upgrade that has been performed recently in Bunbury, Albany and Kalgoorlie. The new service will provide clients with faster connection speeds, and will also cater for the growing number of iiNet clients in the Margaret River region.

Co-location and Fibre customers will benefit from the replacement of our co-location and fibre connection router, with improvements in both performance and redundancy. The router has been replaced by a pair of new routers - a primary and a backup - each with approximately four times the capacity of the old device. Customers with co-located and fibre connections will experience improved performance due to the greater capacity of the new routers, with the second of the two providing backup within 10 seconds of any failure of the primary router.

Customers who are able to take advantage of this service are being contacted individually. There is no additional cost to customers who elect to use the redundancy feature.

iiNet has also recently upgraded our border router, significantly increasing the capacity to upgrade our primary Internet link. The new router supports ten times the speed of the old router, and removes the limitations on upgrading our main link to the Internet well into the foreseeable future. This will enable us to maintain the level of service our customers have come to expect from iiNet as an Internet Service Provider as our customer base continues to expand.

Broadband Payments

iiNet would like to clarify the matter of payment methods for Broadband ADSL accounts. ALL ADSL applications require credit card details to be provided for payment of the setup fee.

HOME accounts (ADSL Freedom and ADSL Explorer) MUST have valid credit card details held on record at all times for not only the setup fee but also the ongoing monthly charges.

BUSINESS accounts (Express, Corporate, Commerce and Enterprise) must have valid credit card details for the payment of the setup fee, and then have the option of paying ongoing monthly fees by credit card or any other payment method.

You do have the option to pay your Broadband ADSL account before the due date by any of our other payment methods, and provided this payment reaches us prior to your card being scheduled for automatic debiting, the card will not be charged. Your credit card details will however be held on record as a fall back method if payment has not been received by the due date.

Games News!

Star Wars fever has reached our shores so it brings the team at iiNet Games a great deal of pleasure to announce our Jedi Knight II server. Released last month, this is already one of the more popular titles on the games network, with people putting their Light Sabre and Force skills to the test online. If you have ever dreamed of deflecting blaster shots with your light sabre, then this game may well be for you. You can find our Jedi Knight II server here:

    jk2.iinet.net.au

Last month also saw the release of Counter-Strike 1.4 and Half-Life 1.1.0.9. Released on the same day, these represent the newest generation of play for the most popular games on the Internet. iiNet's Counter-Strike servers have been full since Anzac Day, as people who haven't played Counter-Strike in a while are enjoying the game anew. The patches (both upgrade and full for all versions) can be found on the iiNet FTP server:

The full list of iiNet Half-Life servers (there are too many to list here!) can be found on the iiNet Games web site:
