Newsletter: October 2000
* Welcome * ADSL * Computer Expo * iiTel New Lines * Melbourne and Sydney POPs * Load Management * New Tools * Ellenbrook Intranet * Retail Outlets Welcome Welcome to iiNet's November Newsletter. We are all quite excited at our rollout of Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) across Perth's suburbs. Read on to see if your suburb is eligible. The Computer Expo was a great success for us again this year. We would like to thank the event organisers and all the people of Perth who stopped by our stand to say hello or take advantage of the show specials. ADSL iiNet is the first provider in Western Australia to commercially provide ADSL with a static IP address. This not only allows you to host your own mail, but also allows easy access for Local Area Networks. These benefits are all inclusive in our ADSL Express and ADSL Corporate accounts, providing the business community with one of the most inexpensive ADSL connections on the market. The current exchanges that are within ADSL coverage are:
Australind Morley Bulwer Mt Hawthorn Bunbury Mullaloo Cannington Picton Cottesloe Pier Eaton Subiaco Gelorup Tuart Hill Hamersley Victoria Park Maylands Wellington Many exchanges are currently under review, including:
Ascot Hilton Bassendean Kingsley Bateman Nedlands Doubleview Riverton Fremantle South Perth Application forms are available in PDF format from our web site:
iiNet's ADSL product is aimed specifically at business customers. For residential users, Bigpond and Primus offer unlimited download ADSL at very reasonable prices. Further queries should be addressed to iiNet's corporate division at corporate@iinet.net.au. Computer Expo This month we sponsored and attended the Computer Expo held at the Burswood Dome. We are proud to say that we again won an award! This year it was for Best Stand in the Large Format Category. We would like to say congratulations to Mr Darren M of Tuart Hill who won the computer generously donated by Headlam Computers of Leederville. You can drop by Headlam's website at:
Well done Darren, we hope you enjoy your prize. iiTel New Lines As part of our planned network upgrade, we have recently brought online 4000 new lines for metropolitan Perth clients to dial. The establishment of our own pool of dial in telephone lines is a first for a West Australian ISP. The number for these new lines is (08) 6265 0000 and is only to be used by metropolitan Perth clients dialing in with Explorer, Discovery, Atalantis, Endeavour and Web Affilliate accounts. Regional numbers will be added in the coming months. You may call this new number but please note that you should start by checking with Telstra first to make sure that the call will be local. You may call Telstra on 1-2552 and quote both your telephone number and the number you will be dialing or you can use Telstra's Online Call Cost Calculator to confirm the cost. This may be found at the following URL:
We would like to apologise to any clients who have been inconvenienced by following the incorrect link supplied in the notifying email. For instructions on how to change the number in your dial up software, please visit the following URL:
Then simply select the Operating System you use to connect to the Internet and follow the instructions. Melbourne and Sydney POPs Both our Melbourne and Sydney points of presence (POP) are now online and we are pleased to say that we are signing up our first interstate clients! The dial in numbers for these new POPs are:
Customers previously using the Roaming Network in Melbourne and Sydney may now swap over to these new numbers. As with all number changes, customers should check with their telephone carrier first, to ensure that the call is local. Load Management In an effort to improve performance for the majority of our customers, iiNet is trialling a new network management process, which will apply only to "flat rate" dial up services, such as the Explorer, Pioneer and Web Affiliate. Customers on a flat rate service who use more than 750M in any 28 day period will be moved into a separate section of the network until their usage drops back below 750M. These customers may find that access to some external services, such as napster and streaming audio, is slower. Local services such as email and local gaming will not be affected at all. There is no "limit" to how much you can download. It's just that downloading may be a bit slower once you go over 750M. This segmenting of the network allows iiNet to better manage its network, and also ensures that the heavier users don't adversely affect other people's enjoyment of the Internet. If you find that your traffic usage is staying above 750MB, and you really need the best performance, you may wish to consider an account better suited to your needs. Please visit our Product page at:
Your current volume use for the last 28 days can be viewed by using this URL: http://ragtime.iinet.net.au/bin/volume.cgi p> If you have further questions please do not hesitate to contact iiNet's Support team by emailing support@iinet.net.au New Tools To assist our clients with monitoring their account volume usage we have developed a new tool. Called appropriately, Volume Usage, this tool delivers to you your total volume counted for the last 28 days. To access this tool point your browser at: http://ragtime.iinet.net.au/bin/volume.cgi This data is generated once a day only, at about midnight. You can also view this data broken down by day in graph form.
