Newsletter: September 2001
* Welcome Welcome
Welcome to iiNet's September newsletter. Network Upgrades
As mentioned in our last newsletter, iiNet's Rockingham POP has a new number, which all our Rockingham clients can now dial. The number is (08) 95009000 - don't forget to check with your telecommunications provider to ensure this is a local call! This new number has allowed us to increase capacity to 480 lines, giving you improved performance over the old number. So the sooner you change over, the better your connection will be! For help with changing your dialup number, just visit the following URL and select your operating system: http://www.iinet.net.au/help/change/ Margaret River is next in line for a new dialup number, providing better connections and an additional 90 lines for clients dialing this POP. More information on this new service will be available as the upgrade nears completion, and all our Margaret River clients will be notified as the new number becomes available. Our Melbourne and Sydney POPs have been attracting considerable custom over the past few months, so much so that they have almost reached capacity. So there are now upgrades scheduled for both these POPs, which will involve both expanding the current bandwidth to these POPs and increasing line capacity from 30 to 120 lines each. So don't forget the next time you're heading over East to set up a dialup connection to one of our local POPs and dial us directly! A list of all our POP dialup numbers is available at the following URL: http://www.iinet.net.au/help/numbers.html

Network News The big news this month from the Network Operations team is the purchase of an additional 10 Megabits of bandwidth from our upstream provider, UUNet. This has increased our bandwidth to 65 Megabits. In addition, we have commissioned a new 90 Megabit backup link to Optus, meaning we can now guarantee an even better grade of service with no loss performance if our main link should be compromised. Our Network Operations team have recently completed the deployment of a new mail platform, consisting of an upgraded array of six mail servers to replace the three that were previously handling all mail requests. The implementation of these new servers has rectified some issues we were experiencing with SMTP failures, which oform of occasional failures to send email through our system. A small number of clients may have also noticed intermittent password failures as the load on the mail servers increased prior to the upgrade. The new mail platform is designed to balance server load efficiently, and to effectively eliminate any load-related issues that may have affected our mail servers in the past. ADSL Backup Now Available iiNet's latest broadband technology offering high-speed permanent Internet access is fast becoming our most popular corporate product to date!
The iiNet ADSL product offers the following features: In addition to these superior features which have provided exceptional value for money we are now able to offer a backup dialup measure should your ADSL connection lose its route or synch. If this is the case, call 9214 2222 for corporate services, and one of our ADSL team will lodge a fault. Whilst the fault is being resolved, you can dial 6265 0005 on a 56k modem and will be issued your static IP. This means that you will continue to retain the same functionality as the ADSL connection until the fault is resolved and your ADSL connection is restored. Please note the following:
Call Centre News As mentioned earlier, our iiNet Call Centre has recently implemented an Interactive Voice Response (IVR) system, bringing us in line with many of the leading call centres across the country. The motivation behind the introduction of such a system was to better enable our staff to respond to your queries in the most efficient manner possible. After a great deal of work by our Project Manager, Network Operations team and the third party provider, the system was finally integrated successfully into our PABX and went live on Monday August 20th. After a few teething problems, the IVR is now functioning. Based on incoming customer feedback, we are now working towards making the system more user-friendly & easier to listen to, so that you can get the information that you need in the shortest possible time. Games News It's a very exciting time at iiNet Games. iiNet has just deployed two new games servers in Perth! This has allowed a flood of new games and services for clients to be deployed. For the Counterstrike players, you'll notice that iiNet now has six Counterstrike servers in Perth. Added to this, cs2 through cs6 are all running the anti-cheat software "Punkbuster". Players who attempt to cheat on these servers will find themselves banned from playing on iiNet game servers. The new game servers have allowed the last of the old games network to be retired. Gone are the old PIII400 machines (which were state of the art two years ago), and all the games are now hosted on the new games network. Please note that players who have been using the old Wantree server names will now need to connect to the iiNet server name from now on. Have a question about your favourite game? A FAQ for gamers has been released on the iiNet games site for players. Check out: http://games.iinet.net.au/faq.html iiNet has re-introduced Quake III Urban Terror. The new Urban Terror server is located at q3ut.iinet.net.au, and the latest versions can be found as usual on the iiNet ftp server in the q3ut directory: ftp://ftp.iinet.net.au/pub/games/quake/quake3/q3ut
