Some of the things that might cause Error 678 are:

  • Dialling incorrect phone number
  • Dialling a number with an area code in front
  • Dialling through a PABX without dialling the number to get a line out
  • Time out settings in your modem
  • Problems with the modem drivers
  • Problems with the phone line

Click here for instructions to Check the Dial-up number

You will need to pay attention to what the modem "sounds" like when dialling to iiNet. Does it take long to give you the error message. If it seems to come up after just a short time, you need to Check the modem's timeout settings

Once these settings have been verified, pick up the phone and dial the iiNet dial-up number as you would any other number. If the modem answers, the problem might be with your modem or its driver, if so click to Check the modem settings

If you cannot get through when trying to call the dial-up number with a phone or get a recorded message of any kind, there could be with the phone line and you will need to call the Phone company (like Telstra) and make sure there are no problems with the line. What you should hear when you dial the dial-up number with your phone is a data noise such as a fax machine makes when sending/receiving a fax.
