Common Browser Error Messages
Netscape crashes when you access web pages that use Java applets
Netscape Communicator or even the computer might hang or crash when accessing
web pages that use Java applets. The bottom of the browser window may say Starting
Java when the problems occur.
Make sure you are running the leterst version of Netscape, you can check that
at: http://cgi.netscape.com/cgi-bin/upgrade.cgi
If still having problems, check the solutions below.
Solution 1.
- Exit Netscape
- Go to My Computer and double click on your hard drive (usually that
would be C:)
- You will need to find the folder where your Netscape's Cache is normally
it would be in:
- Double click Program Files
- Double click Netscape
- Double click Users
- Double click name of your profile
- Click only once on Cache folder to highlight it
- From the File menu, select Delete

- When asked to Confirm Folder Delete, click Yes
- Click once on the netscape.hst file to highlight it

- From the File menu, select Delete as previously
- When asked to Confirm File Delete, click Yes
- Close all windows and restart Netscape
Solution 2: Scan and Defragment your hard drive
- Close all programs
- Go to Start then Programs then Accessories then System
Tools and click on Scan Disk
- Follow the instructions to scan the drive your Netscape is installed on
- When finished proceed to Defragment your drive
- To Defragment the drive close all programs
- Go to Start then Programs then Accessories then System
Tools and click on Disk Defragment
- Follow the instructions to defragment your drive, please note that this
process might take a while
Solutions 3: Run Netscape with all background programs closed
- Close all programs including Netscape
- Press Ctrl - Alt - Delete on your keyboard simultaneously
but only once
- You will see a list of programs running on your computer
- Highlight them one by one and click End Task on each and everyone
except for: Explorer and Systray
- You will need to go through pressing Ctrl - Alt - Delete
and Ending task on the programs one by one
- When you have only Explorer and Systray left, click Cancel
- Try running your Netscape now
- If all is ok, one of the programs you have closed was causing the problem,
you might want to start closing one by one and running Netscape to see which
one it was
If any of the above does help, maybe your video card's driver (the software
that runs the card) is causing the conflict. As a temporary fix to this problem,
set your display adapter to Standard VGA then try updating your video driver.
