What is FreePPP?
FreePPP is Mac dial-up software that replaces MacPPP 2.0.1. FreePPP works with
MacTCP and Open Transport (TCP/IP). FreePPP requires system 7.1.x and higher.
FreePPP may not work with some 14,400 baud modems or with some Powerbook 150's.
Requirements
Note: If you are currently running ConfigPPP or OT/PPP without problems, it
is not necessary to use FreePPP.
- System 7.1.x or newer
- Uses either TCP/IP or MacTCP
- May not work with Powerbook 150's May not work with some 14.4 modems
Who Should Not Use FreePPP
FreePPP is always preferable to MacPPP. But if you have an older 14,400 bps
modem you might want to stick with MacPPP 2.0.1 as FreePPP doesn't have a port
speed setting for 14,400 bps. Some modems can't connect with data compression
on, so they need to be able to connect at 14,400 bps. One example is the SupraFAXModem
v.32bis. Some older Global Village modems will also require MacPPP 2.0.1 as
well as a few others. For example the Powerbook 150 with system 7.1.x and a
Global Village modem should use MacPPP 2.0.1. or try new OT/PPP.
Main Features
FreePPP supports Open Transport (TCP/IP) as well as MacTCP. It also has its
own database of modem initialisation strings for many popular modems and can
"auto-detect" the type of modem you use. It can choose the correct init string
and will use that string to connect. Or you can specify an initialisation string
