Open Transport
What is Open Transport?
Open Transport is Apple's networking software that replaced MacTCP 2.0.6.
Who should use Open Transport?
Owners of PCI Power Macs (7200, 7500, 7600, 8500 and 9500 and higher) MUST
use Open Transport. MacTCP is NOT compatible with these machines. Anyone using
a Mac with a 68030 processor or only 8MB of RAM should stick with MacTCP 2.0.6.
All new Macs come with built in Open Transport.
Open Transport Requirements and Problems
Note: If you are currently running a version of Macintosh OS with MacTCP
successfully, it is not necessary to upgrade to Open Transport.
When you install OT 1.1.2 on a 52xx, 53xx, 62xx and 63xx models and get an
error indicating a hardware issue was detected it means that Open Transport
cannot be installed or loaded until the Cache/ROM DIMM is replaced. Your computer
will continue to run classic networking. Please contact an Apple authorised
technician to have your computer repaired.
Requirements for Open Transport:
- System 7.5.3 or later is recommended
- At least 12MB of real RAM
- Requires a 68040 microprocessor or better
Open Transport is necessary for the following Macintosh models:
- PowerMac 7200
- PowerMac 7500
- PowerMac 8500
- PowerMac 9500 and higher.
Open Transport 1.1.1 is not recommended for use on Non-PCI Macs with less than 12MB
of REAL RAM. Mac clone owners with system 7.5.3 and above might also want to use
Open Transport.
Open Transport 1.1.2 requires a minimum of 5 MB of RAM (68030 or 68040 computers)
or 8 MB of RAM (PowerPC-based computers). Open Transport memory requirements
are based on total system memory including virtual memory, minus the size of
any RAM disk and disk cache you are using.
Turning on virtual memory (especially on PowerPC-based computers). This may
affect performance.
