Macintosh Troubleshooting - Removing AOL references from iMac

The iMac comes pre-installed with America On-Line software. This software loads a couple of extensions that can sometimes create problems. One of the problems can be a greyed out - unavailable - Connect/Open button in FreePPP or the Remote Access dialer. To fix the problem follow the instructions below.

First check if you are using Remote Access - PPP or FreePPP, if you are not sure which one you use to connect, follow these instructions:

  • Click Apple
  • Click Control Panel
  • Open TCP/IP
  • In Connect via check if you are using FreePPP or PPP
  • If something else is selected under the menu select either FreePPP or PPP then restart your computer and try it again. If it is still greyed out, follow the steps below.

Open your Macintosh Hard Drive

Double click System Folder

Double click Extensions Folder

Locate the four above Files
Drag the extensions listed above to your trash
Please note that this will disable you from using the America On-Line Service Provider

Close the Extensions folder
From the System Folder, double click on the folder StartUp Items
Drag the item called AOL Scheduler to the trash
Close all the folders
Empty the trash - this can be done through the menu Special

Click here to return to the Macintosh index
