Macintosh Troubleshooting - There was a problem initialising the serial port. It may already be in use.

  1. Reset both the modem and your computer: Turn the modem off and back on and do a full shutdown of your computer. Wait a few seconds, and turn it back on again. Then try again. If it does not help, try the next step.

  2. If you are using FreePPP, open the FreePPP Setup (Under Apple - Control Panels - FreePPP), under Using make sure you select the correct modem script, if you are unsure of what modem you are using try selecting a Generic Modem. Make sure that you have the right port specified. In some Powerbook Computers you might have settings pointing to Internal Modem, PC Card, and Printer/Modem Port or something else. FreePPP defaults to Modem Port, so if the modem is connected to any of these other ports or the Printer Port, then that setting must be changed.

If you have problems finding the settings check:

  3. Make sure that no other modem/fax software is running at the background

    • If you have System 7.5 or later, go to Extensions Manager (Apple - Control Panels - Extensions Manager). Unselect Anything to do with faxing. If you have Global Village Toolbox or Global Fax these must be disabled. If you need to use your modem for faxing later on, just go back and re-select anything that you unselected. Restart your computer, and try again.

    • If you are running System 7.0.1 or 7.1, go to the Extensions Folder (Hard Drive - System Folder - Extensions Folder) and move to the desktop anything that has to do with faxing. Then, restart the computer. If you need to use the modem for faxing later on, put these items back in the system folder and restart your Macintosh each time.

  4. If you do not have an Appletalk printer hooked up to your Macintosh, try turning off Appletalk by clicking Apple - Chooser and click Inactive. Then restart your Macintosh.
